"Orphan" the movie synopsis:

Kate (Vera Farmiga) and John Coleman (Peter Sarsgaard) are experiencing strains in their marriage after Kate's third child was stillborn. The loss is also taking a toll on Kate's fragile psyche; she is still recovering from a drinking habit. When the couple decides to adopt another child they find themselves drawn to Esther (Isabelle Fuhrman), a nine-year-old Russian girl at the local orphanage. Esther's angelic persona steals their hearts, and they immediately arrange to have her brought home. While Kate and John's daughter Max (Aryana Engineer), who was rendered deaf and mute by an accident in the frozen lake near their house, embraces Esther almost immediately, their son Daniel (Jimmy Bennett) is somewhat less welcoming.

Not long after Esther arrives, she pushes a girl who teased her in class off a slide, breaking her leg. Kate and John initially seem to believe Esther's claim that it was an accident. Max saw Esther shove the girl, and later covers for Esther by signing that the girl "slipped." However, Kate grows suspicious when she goes to lecture Esther about watching her have sex with John. During the lecture, Esther says that she knows they were "*******"--a word Kate doesn't expect a nine-year-old to know. Later, Sister Abigail, the head of the orphanage, comes to check up on Esther and warns Kate and John about her tendency to be around when things go wrong. Unfortunately, Esther overhears her, and later kills her by the side of the road by bashing her in the head with a hammer. She then has Max help her hide the body and the hammer. Daniel sees Esther and Max climbing down from the treehouse, but doesn't know why they were there: so that Esther can hide the evidence of Sister Abigail's murder. That night Esther holds a box cutter to Daniel's neck and threatens to cut off his penis if he tells anyone what he saw.

Kate is increasingly convinced that Esther isn't who she appears to be, especially when the orphanage calls her and tells her that they can't find any record of the Russian orphanage from where she came. However, John doesn't believe Kate, even after Esther cuts all of the blooms off of the rosebush Kate had put up in honor of their stillborn daughter and tries to present them as a gift to Kate. Esther then sneaks into John's workshop and breaks her own arm in a vise, and convinces John that Kate broke it in the earlier scuffle. On Esther's first day back at school, she slips Kate's SUV into reverse while she and Daniel are getting out, nearly killing Max. Badly shaken, Kate buys two bottles of wine, but at the last minute pours one of them down the drain.

Later that day Kate sneaks into her room and leafs through her Bible. She discovers it came from a place called the Saarne Institute. A search of the Web reveals that it is located in Estonia. She calls the Institute and discovers that it isn't an orphanage, but a mental institution. Greatly concerned, Kate emails an image of Esther to the Institute to find out more about her.

By this time, Kate is convinced that Esther is evil, but John and her counselor think that Kate is relapsing into her drinking habit. Kate insists she isn't going crazy, but then John produces the other bottle Kate bought the night before, saying Esther found it. He threatens to leave her unless she gets help, and fast.

A few days later, Daniel talks to Max about Esther's behavior. Max reveals that she's drawn several pictures of Esther's misdeeds, and that they hid the hammer in his treehouse. Daniel decides to get the hammer and go to the police. However, Esther follows him up and sets the treehouse on fire, intending to get rid of the evidence and kill Daniel at the same time. Daniel escapes being burned to death, but falls out of the tree and is severely injured. Esther tries to finish him off by smashing a brick over his head, but Max shoves her out of the way just in time. At the hospital, Esther sneaks into Daniel's room, removes his respirator and tries to smother him to death. In a fury, Kate knocks Esther to the ground and has to be sedated by doctors.

At home, Esther cuts one of Kate's dresses to make a provocative outfit and puts on a large amount of makeup. She finds an inebriated John in the living room and tries to seduce him. Greatly alarmed, John threatens to call the orphanage about her. Esther reacts by cutting the power to the house and stabbing John to death. Max witnesses the murder and hides in her closet.

Just as Kate is coming out of sedation, she gets a call from the Saarne Institute's director, Dr. Värava. He has disturbing news--Esther isn't a girl at all, but a 33-year-old woman named Leena. She has a disease that prevents her from growing physically, and has spent most of her life posing as a little girl. The doctor also tells Kate that Esther is dangerously psychotic, and has killed dozens of people. Horrified, Kate rushes home to find Esther stalking Max with John's pistol. Kate tries to stop her, but Esther shoots her in the arm and tries to chase down Max.

Max runs to the greenhouse, but just when Esther is about to shoot her, Kate jumps through the roof and tackles Esther. A fierce struggle ensues, ending up at the frozen pond. Just as Esther is about to kill Kate, Max, who has followed them out, shoots a hole in the ice. Kate fights off Esther's attempts to drown her and crawls out of the hole. However, Esther manages to pull herself out as well. Reverting to her little-girl persona, Esther begs Kate, "Don't let me die, Mommy." Kate screams, "I'm not your fucking mommy!" and kicks her in the head, breaking her neck and sending her back into the pond to drown.
