Swimming

Kirsty Coventry of Zimbabwe sets a new world record in the women's 100 m backstroke semifinal with a time of 58.77

Kosuke Kitajima of Japan wins the Olympic gold medal in the men's 100 m breaststroke, and sets a world record of 58.91.

Arkady Vyatchanin of Russia sets a new Olympic record in the men's 100 m backstroke semifinal with a time of 53.06, only for the record to be set again in heat 2 of the semifinal by Hayden Stoeckel of Australia, with a time of 52.97.

The United States team breaks the world record they had set in the semifinals by nearly four seconds, winning the gold medal in the men's 4 x 100m freestyle relay with a time of 3:08:24, beating France by 0.08 seconds. At the start of the last leg, France's former 100m freestyle world record holder Alain Bernard was ahead by nearly a body length. But in the final seconds Jason Lezak was able to chase him down with a time of 46.06, the fastest relay leg in history. Five of the eight teams in the final finished under the previous world record, and a sixth team was only 0.03 seconds over the previous record. Australia's Eamon Sullivan also broke the individual record of 100m freestyle by swimming the leadoff leg in 47.24.

Rebecca Adlington delivered only Great Britain's fifth victory in any female Olympic swimming final with a gold medal in the 400 metre free-style ahead of Katie Hoff after being behind for much of the race. Joanne Jackson also had success in acheiving a bronze medal for Britain.

Shooting

Entering into the finals in fourth place, Abhinav Bindra became the first Olympian from India to win an individual Olympic gold medal. This was India's first gold medal in an Olympic event since 1980.

On August 11, 2008 - Zhang Xiangxiang won China's second Weightlifting medal of the day after lifting 319 kilograms in the Men's 62kg Weightlifting competition on August 11.

Zhang lifted 143kg in the Snatch, one kilogram above second place Ji Hunmin of Republic of Korea. Diego Salazar of Colombia and Im Yong Su of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea tied at 138kg.

Zhang then went on to lift 176kg in the Clean and Jerk and took the gold medal. Ji and Im surprisingly failed all three attempts in the Clean and Jerk and handed over the chance to Salazar, who lifted 167kg and took the silver medal with a total weight of 305kg. Indonesia's Triyatno placed third with a total weight of 298kg.

On August 11, 2008 - Spectators might have thought they were experiencing déjà vu when they witnessed another Chinese lifter surnamed Chen dominate the Weightlifting final on August 11. This time it was defending Olympic champion Chen Yanqing, who retained her title in Women's 58 kilogram Weightlifting with a total of 244kg.
