********************************************************************** Astro Battleground 2009 Preliminary 4 (Date of Broadcast: 21 Nov 2009, Saturday, 7pm)
The competition gets more intensifying after the previous preliminary round. After having to see Shadow Emotion and La Bella Trio eliminated last week, audiences will have to be prepared to see 2 more groups face elimination. Due to poor performance, M.J.C had the lowest score and was eliminated. On the other hand, Twister XF and FREE had to battle it out in order to remain in the competition.
Alike with Preliminary 3, the theme for Preliminary 4 is Asian Hip Hop. Contestants have to perform to songs from the Asian region, in terms of the artiste’s or composer’s origin. The main aim of having this theme is to present the uniqueness of Asian Hip Hop and how these teams are able to combine their skills and creativity with the songs. The teams who are in Preliminary 4 are Katoon Network, FREE, M.J.C, Twister XF, Dancologist and Wakaka Fever.
Katoon Network used a comedic and theatrical approach in their performance this time. It was a pleasure having to watch them in their Kungfu attire and applying Kungfu elements in their dance routine. Hence, they were best in show. Marcus said that they managed to entertain the audience by telling a story through combining different dance styles. However, Bobby felt that they could do even better. As for FREE, Rambo felt that they lack in portraying their emotions when performing. On top of that, Bobby claimed that he could not see any Asian Hip Hop in their dance.
M.J.C received negative comments from the judges today. Marcus could not understand what message the team was trying to convey. In addition to it, they were not in sync with the music. As for Twister XF, they managed to capture the audiences’ attention by using classic tracks from Sam Hui. Marcus felt that they carried the theme out very well. Bobby suggested that their movements must be neater and more synchronized.
It was a Shanghai affair when Dancologist appeared in their bright red outfits. Bobby and Rambo were delighted to see the girls being playful while they presented an excellent routine. They were good in their dance, emotions and even had excellent eye contact. As for Wakaka Fever, they have only used percussion beats throughout their whole routine. Rambo praised them for their ‘universal’ dance steps and that people could relate to it easily. Apart from that, Marcus felt that Wakaka Fever’s performance was very entertaining.
Who will be eliminated in the battle segment? Will it be Twister XF or FREE? For more exciting dance moves on Battleground, remember to tune in to Astro Wah Lai Toi (Channel 311) on Saturday, November 21 at 7 p.m.
********************************************************************** After the audition, we officially have 16 dance teams who will compete for top spot in Battleground and be champions in street dance. The rules of the competition have now been changed. Apart from new participants, we can see former champions coming back in hopes to be champions again. Elecoldxhot was best in show while FOX and Max Identity had a round of battle in order to gain a place in the next round as they were in the bottom two.
The theme for this round is ‘Signature Dance’ and the reason for this is so that dance teams have the chance to perform their fortes and show us the teams’ identities and their individual and unique dance styles. There are 8 groups in total competing in Preliminary 1 and it consist of Street WreckerZ, FOX, Max Identity, MOVE, D-Black Gang, La Bella Trio, Shadow Emotion and Elecoldxhot.
With a combination of members from 2007 champion dance team and new members Street WreckerZ was formed and they were the first to perform. Rambo stated that they managed to capture the audiences’ attention through their dance moves and all eyes were upon them while they were performing. On top of that, Marcus felt that they allocated sufficient strength in their dance moves. However, all-girl team FOX, did not received praises as how Street WreckerZ did. According to Rambo, despite having the potential and attraction, they lacked strength in their movements. Bobby felt that although their performance was great, they would be look more attractive and charming if only they had more strength while dancing.
Max Identity was complimented as ‘cute’ by Rambo and hopes that they will be even better, just as long as they put more strength into their dance moves. On the other hand, MOVE was formed with 2007 runner-up, Ah Ya as the leader. Despite overall improvements, the judges find that their dance moves and choreography has to be more refined and neat. Due to these factors, the judges found it hard to award MOVE with good marks.
With 4 girls and a boy, D-Black Gang was formed and is considered as a ‘complete’ group, performance wise. However, they have to present in through various different levels. La Bella Trio, consisting of 3 young girls received compliments from all 3 judges, saying that they put on a great show and the judges were attracted to their dance moves. Having ‘locking’ as their forte, Shadow Emotion received praises from both Marcus and Bobby for their ‘locking’ dance moves. Apart from that, the judges also felt that it was good that they presented their choreography through different levels.
Last year’s champion, ECX formed Elecoldxhot together with 2007 champion, Dennis Yin. With their impressive presence, the judges unanimously agreed that Elecoldxhot was the best in Preliminary 1. Despite being fast, accurate and having wicked moves, Rambo feels that they have to improve on the quality of their dance. Marcus, on the other hand thinks that they are wise when it comes to playing with their emotion and have included various dance elements in their routine.
After a round of competition, the team with the lowest marks will be eliminated right away. On the other hand, the bottom two teams , FOX and Max Identity will have to battle in order to earn a place in the next round. So, who will win the battle as only one team can have advance to the next round. Tune in to Astro Wah Lai Toi (Channel 311) on the October 31st, 7 p.m in order to find out who are still in the running to be Battleground’s champion dance team.
