Athletics

Russia's Valeriy Borchin wins gold in the men's 20 km walk with a time of 1:19:01 edging out Jefferson Perez, the world champion since 2003, by only 14 seconds.[124]
Jamaica's Usain Bolt wins gold medal in the men's 100m with a world record of 9.69 seconds[125] in a race dubbed by Michael Johnson as "the greatest 100m performance in the history of the event".

Badminton

Zhang Ning successfully defends her women's singles Olympic title against top seed Xie Xingfang.

Rowing

The Great Britain team of Tom James, Steve Williams, Peter Reed and Andrew Triggs-Hodge win the men's coxless fours, making it the third time in a row that Great Britain has won gold in this event.

New Zealand's Caroline and Georgina Evers-Swindell successfully defend their 2004 title in the women's double sculls by beating Germany by 0.01 seconds. New Zealand had a time of 7:07.32, Germany had a time of 7:07.33.

Georgeta Damian of Romania wins gold in the final women's coxless pair race, making it her fifth career gold, as well as her third consecutive Olympic gold in that event.

Swimming

Michael Phelps' victory by 0.01 seconds in the men's 100 m butterfly over Serbian swimmer Milorad Čavić ties him with Mark Spitz for the most Olympic gold medals in one games.

César Cielo wins the men's 50 m freestyle, Brazil's first ever swimming Olympic gold medal.

Rebecca Adlington breaks the world record in the women's 800 m freestyle. Previously set by Janet Evans in 1989, it had been the longest-standing world record in swimming. Adlington's two gold medals in these games make her the most successful British swimmer at the Olympics in the last 100 years.
Weightlifting

Jang Mi-Ran of South Korea wins the unlimited (+75kg) Division of women's weightlifting by breaking four world records: snatch, twice in clean-and-jerk, and total.

The first Badminton gold of the Games went to 33-year-old Zhang Ning, who beat teammate Xie Xingfang in the Women's Singles final. Indonesia's Maria Kristin Yulianti collected the bronze medal by beating China's Lu Lan 11-21, 21-13 and 21-15 to clinch third place - Zhang Ning retains her title. Russia won the Fencing Women's Foil Team title at the Beijing Olympics on Saturday, beating the United States 28-11 in the final. Italy finished third, upsetting Hungary 32-23 in the bronze medal fight.(Thank you and credits to Xinhua Images)

Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia has won gold and set a new Olympic record in the Women's 10000m at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games on August 15.



Gymnastics:

Nastia Liukin wins the gold medal in the Women's artistic individual all-around. Her father and coach, Valeri Liukin, won a Gymnastics gold medal for the Soviet Union at the Seoul Olympics in 1988. Together, with Shawn Johnson taking the silver, was the fourth time in Olympic history where a country took the top two spots in the Individual All Around events.

Table tennis:

Singapore qualifies for the final in the women's team event, thus ensuring that the country will win its first Olympic medal, in any event, since 1960
