109 contestants from all over the world compete for the crown, marking the biggest turnout in the 58 years of the pageant, surpassing the previous record of 107 during Miss World 2004. Ksenia Sukhinova of Russia won the crown and succeeded Miss World 2007, Zhang Zilin of the People's Republic of China.

JOHANNESBURG, Dec. 13 - 21-year old Miss Russia, Ksenia Sukhinova, was crowned Miss World 2008 at the conclusion of a spectacular event televised live to over 2 billion people in 130 countries.
Sukhinova, 1.78 m student and model from the Tyumen region in Russia, will spend her year making appearances for various charity and social causes and attending high-end events and shows.
The 1st runner-up was Miss India, Parvathy Onamakuttan; and the 2nd runner-up was Miss Trinidad & Tobago, Gabrielle Walcott, who also won the "Beauty with a Purpose" fast-track for her work with children suffering from cancer.
Also in the top 5 were the contestants from Angola (Brigith dos Santos) and South Africa (Tansey Coetzee).
It was announced the day before that the Miss World 2009 pageant will take place again in Johannesburg, next December.
Miss United States (Lane Lindell) walked away with the World Designer Award, given to the best evening gown.
Completing the top 15 semi finalists were the contestants from Barbados, Brazil, Croatia, Iceland, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Spain, Ukraine and Venezuela.

* Winner: Trinidad & Tobago, Gabrielle Walcott: for working with the Just Because Foundation dedicated to create hospitable conditions for children with cancer. Gabrielle helped raise about $100,000 in Charity for the creation of a new ward for these children.
* The remaining 4 finalists were:
o Hungary, Szilvia Freire: For working with the NEM ADOM FEL Foundation, dedicated to the awareness that handicapped and disabled people are of value to our society, and to make these individuals feel accepted.
o Kenya, Ruth Kinuthia: For working with a school in the slums of Nairobi mainly for students who have been orphaned by HIV AIDS, helping raise funds for the sustenance of the school, as well as being a role model for students.
o Mexico, Anagabriela Espinoza: For assisting the Casa Hogar of Jilotepec, "Ayuda y Solidaridad con las Niñas de la Calle", which means help and solidarity with the girls from the streets. Anagaby created a dynamic event called "Pass the Crown" where she would ask the girls about their best quality, and then put a tiara on their heads because of it.
