Dayana Mendoza, Miss Venezuela Universe and Miss Universe 2008, is the new Miss Grand Slam. She was chosen among 450 beauties who competed in the 5 Grand Slam pageants last year, as the best overall contestant of 2008. It was not an easy choice, though. Dayana received 5 votes (Edwin Dominguez, Gregory Borowski, Marjukka, Miss Unibarse, Sergio Gomez) in the final round of competition, against 4 (Thiago Castro, Dawid Barniak, Tomaz Haberl, Rana Lee) of Miss Russia World, and Miss World 2008, Ksenia Sukhinova.
The difference between the two stunners was of a single vote.

Miss Mexico Universe, Elisa Najera, got 3 votes (Patrick Tripoldi, Martina Aubrechtová, Jean van Decasteele), finishing in third place, while Miss Brazil World, Tamara Almeida, received 2 votes (Nick C, Hector Joaquin) in the final round, ending the competition in 4th place. Miss Ukraine World, Irina Zhuravskaya, wasn't voted in this final round, therefore finishing in 5th place.
This is the first time in eleven years that a Venezuelan beauty wins GB's most prestigious award. In 1999, Martina Thorogood, Miss Venezuela World, tied with Spain's Diana Nogueira in first place, but lost to the Spaniard beauty after a tie-break vote.
Stunning Dayana was crowned Miss Universe in Nha Trang, Vietnam on July 14. 2008. She became Venezuela's 5th woman to be crowned Miss Universe.
